A redesigned rendition of a strategy classic, RISK: Factions combines familiar gameplay rules with original mechanics, creating one of the most engaging and stylish multiplayer games of the decade.
Graphics and Sound 3.5/5
The RISK board game franchise is more than sixty years old, and it came from the most primitive renditions with wooden tokens to digital versions like the one we're looking at now. While RISK: Factions is considered a pretty old game nowadays, it has aged rather well since the release in 2011. Of course, the main secret is the cartoonish visual style that has managed to retain most of its charm for almost a decade, but there is another way to look at it: centered around strategic depth, such games age generally slower than most other genres.
RISK: Factions is a strategy game, so controls are not too crucial here. Anyway, not only is it pretty comfortable to play but also the game manages to introduce new ways of moving your units. There is this new Fast Battle attack that can be performed simply by dragging and dropping tokens, and it is now possible to get a quick overview of your progress with just one click. All in all, this game has controls that are smooth enough for you to forget about them, concentrating on the tactics instead.
Most of the classic gameplay mechanics have stayed intact, so if you've played RISK games before, you'll get used to this version pretty quickly. The only real improvement is the factions system, hence the name. There are five different fantasy factions, including cats with Generalissimo Meow as their leader and an army of robots, each of them with their unique bonuses.
Lasting Appeal 3.5/5
The original Risk game has been known for its deep rules and high replay value, and this version of the game seems to retain those features. While you won't spend months in RISK: Factions, it's more than enough to keep you and your friends busy for a couple of evenings.
RISK: Factions may not be the best game even in its franchise, but it puts a new spin on familiar mechanics with an interesting visual style as a bonus. Deep and engaging, it's a nice way to revisit old battlegrounds with your friends or other players online.
