RESIDENT EVIL 3
CAPCOM CO., LTD.
Inspired by the universal acclaim of the Resident Evil 2 remake, Capcom has decided to continue its course of reviving old PlayStation classics. However, not only does it fail to repeat that success, but the reworked version also pales in comparison to the original which was released in 1999. Short and seemingly rushed, RE3 Remake is going to disappoint even the most ardent fans of the franchise.
Graphics and Sound 4/5
This Resident Evil 3 remake is not just a reissue that's optimized to run on modern PCs – a notable amount of work have been put in this project. And the result is really impressive: RE3 looks simply great, allowing you to meet your favorite characters and revisit familiar locations in HD. All sounds and voices are recorded from scratch, too. However, the original soundtrack is also missing, and that may disappoint many nostalgic fans of the original game.
The controls have seen some serious improvements, too. While the original PlayStation version was rather uncomfortable, with clumsy characters and fixed camera angles, this Resident Evil 3 remake features a much more convenient controls system that is similar to the RE2 remake. That means the gameplay mechanics remind more of third-person shooters than survival horror classics.
Improved graphics and reworked controls may be great features, but the remake just doesn't feel the same anymore. First of all, the game is extremely short – my first playthrough took about six hours, leaving me wondering if I've missed the actual game. The single-player mode looks more like a bait to attract more players to this new multiplayer mode called Resistance. However, it's disappointing, too – but the game has lost so many content and mechanics that it feels like a DLC for RE2.
Lasting Appeal 2/5
Sadly, the lasting appeal of the RE3 remake is remarkably low. You can finish the game in a couple of hours, and there's just not enough content to play it again. The multiplayer mode is not that great, too.
Completely reworked and visually impressive, new RE3 feels too short and empty to be considered a successful remake. But if you still want to check it out, be sure to wait for a sale.
