FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE
SQUARE ENIX CO. LTD.
A modern remake of a PS1 classic, Final Fantasy VII allows you to revisit your favorite levels – or finally experience one of the most acclaimed role-playing games of all time. While it has aged since its first release in 1997, especially in terms of graphics, Final Fantasy VII remains one of those games that can be engaging and touching even decades later. Let's see what this remake has to offer.
Graphics and Sound 2.5/5
Square Enix, the developer, and publisher of the original game has decided to leave graphics mostly untouched for this remake, so I'm going, to be honest with you here: the game looks just awful. And it doesn't matter how many hours you had spent in it back then – it simply didn't age well. However, the soundtrack is as perfect as it once was, and the game is worth playing at least for those nostalgic sounds and melodies.
The game features a turn-based combat system as well as various mini-games, each of them having its gameplay and controls. Anyway, they are comfortable enough (for a 1997 game, of course), and you can get used to them pretty quickly. The interface is tailored to PS1 controllers, but this PC version is easily controllable, too. And the game itself has been optimized to work perfectly well on the majority of modern operating systems.
The gameplay mechanics is what makes Final Fantasy VII worth playing – even decades after its original release. The story is touching, the characters are memorable and well-designed, the turn-based combat is somewhat monotonous yet deep. And the amount of content is just astonishing: you get all kinds of side quests, bonus levels, mini-games, and just little details that help the game make your adventure so exciting. And now some achievements motivate you to explore the world of the game and track your progress.
Lasting Appeal 4/5
It doesn't matter if you've played Final Fantasy VII before – you'll be hooked for hours. A combination of the nostalgic soundtrack, well-written plot, and classic gameplay mechanics is too much for you to resist. So be sure to cancel your plans before installing it.
This Final Fantasy VII remake brings you back one of the most cherished role-playing classics – but only if you are brave enough to look at graphics that are 23 years old.
